To win her, he devises a trick: through a false confidence, he leads her to believe her husband is unfaithful and has arranged a secret rendezvous in the darkness of a bathhouse. Consumed by jealousy, Catelle goes there to catch the unfaithful husband — unaware it is Richard himself waiting for her. La fausse confidence et la jalousie de Catelle
Ne pouvant séduire Catelle par les voies ordinaires, Richard lui fait annoncer, par une entremetteuse, que son propre mari la trompe avec sa femme Simonette. Folle de jalousie, Catelle décide d’aller surprendre l’infidèle en personne.
Unable to win Catelle by ordinary means, Richard has a go-between tell her that her own husband is betraying her with his wife Simonette. Consumed by jealousy, Catelle resolves to catch the unfaithful husband herself.
Catelle se rend au rendez-vous obscur
Déguisée, Catelle se glisse dans la chambre obscure d’un établissement de bains où le prétendu rendez-vous doit avoir lieu, résolue à confondre son mari infidèle sans se douter que c’est Richard qui l’y attend.
Disguised, Catelle slips into the darkened chamber of a bathhouse where the supposed rendezvous is to take place, determined to confront her unfaithful husband, never suspecting it is Richard who waits for her there.
Les volets ouverts, la supercherie découverte
Trompée par l’obscurité, Catelle a passé la nuit avec Richard en le croyant son mari. Au matin, en ouvrant les volets, elle découvre la vérité et l’accable aussitôt de reproches furieux.
Deceived by the darkness, Catelle has spent the night with Richard believing him her husband. At dawn, opening the shutters, she discovers the truth and immediately overwhelms him with furious reproaches.
La plaidoirie galante de Richard
Face à la colère de Catelle, Richard plaide sa cause avec une subtile éloquence : elle n’est coupable de rien, puisqu’elle fut trompée, et recommencer ce qu’elle croyait déjà commis n’est pas une nouvelle faute. Peu à peu, elle se laisse gagner.
Facing Catelle’s fury, Richard argues his case with subtle eloquence: she is guilty of nothing, since she was deceived, and repeating what she believed already done is no new offense. Little by little, she lets herself be won over.
Le triomphe de l’éloquence amoureuse
Peu à peu convaincue par l’éloquence amoureuse de Richard, Catelle se laisse fléchir : la colère cède à la complicité, et l’aventure se termine, joyeusement, à l’avantage du séducteur.
Little by little won over by Richard’s amorous eloquence, Catelle lets herself be swayed: anger gives way to complicity, and the adventure ends, joyfully, in the seducer’s favor.
